Feed them fish for summer! Recipes to encourage your children to eat fish

Feed them fish for spring! Recipes to encourage your children to eat fish via Toby & Roo :: daily inspiration for stylish parents and their kids.

Whether you are already a fan of fish and looking to cook it a new way or you need to get your family eating more, these recipes are perfect!

Fish is something that we really should eat more of in this house. I love white fish that has been marinaded or in curries, but I’m not a fan of tuna (only occasionally) or salmon etc. My husband won’t eat fish at all (unless it comes in the fish finger, additive central, shop bought variety)… so feeding the boys fish is usually reserved for a saturday night – take out night for the grown ups – or on the odd occasion that my husband is out or we aren’t eating all together.

I wanted to put together my favourite fish recipes for kids, my boys love these and to be honest, I will always be able to adapt them with minimal fuss so that both the hubster and I are happy too. Fish is, whether you like it or not, a great source of omega 3 and so many other vitamins and nutrients, so it is important that you include it in your diet or make allowances for alternative lifestyles (see my vegan series with LaNoire). Easy to make and the boys love it!

This yummy meal was perfect for the boys and easily done in a hurry.

  • Prawn and noodle Laksa

I dulled down the chillies a bit in this – mainly for Toby as he is like his Daddy and gets upset with too much heat, but if you have a child that likes it then that is perfect.

The boys love a curry flavour and to be fair so do I. Adding prawns meant the boys had something different for tea, but you could easily do this with chunks of fish… or chicken if you must! I will say this is one of the fastest fish meals in my list IF you buy the Laksa paste from the supermarket, though it may be a touch hot if you do.

  • Salmon and Veg parcels

The best thing about this is that it doesn’t need to be done to a recipe – almost anything in your fridge can be thrown in with the fish and the kids will love it. I usually smear some pesto over the fish too for an extra pow of flavour.

This is possibly the boys favourite fish dish, which always surprises me – and others! It’s packed with flavour (and I add even more by smearing pesto or red pesto over the fish before I cook it), so you would think it might be too much for them but they devour it every time they have it, which is most saturdays!

  • Traditional fish pie (with extra cheese)

I always do this without smoked fish because I know that the boys aren’t fans … oh and I add extra cheese 🙂

Ok, I’m probably negating the health benefits with all the extra cheese, but the boys love a good fish pie. Ditch the smoked fish if you think your little ones won’t like the flavour – mine don’t. They like the salmon, prawns and cod/haddock.

I hope these fish recipes inspire you to try fish more. Do you eat a lot of fish at home?
