Jemsip – The drug free cold remedy

A must have remedy for colds during your pregnancy, or if you don't like taking medication.

A must have remedy for colds during your pregnancy, or if you don’t like taking medication.

A few years ago I bought a juicer – I was determined to make 2014 the year and to give us all a boost health wise, and to be fair I did use it quite a lot. Ish. Well, ok, I did a couple of home-made juice cleanses and then made one or two healthy drinks and eventually resigned it to the top of the cupboard where, quite frankly, I can’t reach it even if I want to.

You may have read my posts about my juice detox and the fantastic Superfood Juices by Julie Morris in my What we read series. Along with my new juicer came a fab book by juicing guru Jason Vale called The funky fresh Juice book, which I have to say I poured over and totally loved, but really didn’t use that often until I was pregnant and had a stinking cold. I came across the JEM sip in the juice book I had to try it out and it is still something that I think is legendary for getting rid of the cold symptoms I have without pumping myself full of drugs – something I would love to do but can’t because of Miss I-love-boobie-and-will-never-relinquish-it!

Here’s the recipe:

  • 1 apple – golden delicious if you can
  • 3cm chunk of fresh ginger
  • 1/2 a lemon – leave the waxy skin on
  • 1 tsp of manuka honey
  • 1/2 cup of hot water

I put all the ingredients, apart from the honey and water in the juicer, juiced them and then filled up half a cup, topped it up with hot water and added the honey. Simple as that!

I think this is the perfect drug free cold remedy, either for those who don’t like ‘drugs’ or who can’t take them for medical reasons like pregnancy! What’s even better? If you can get your little one to take it, it is suitable to give to them (minus the honey under age 2) – it makes life a lot easier for them to sweat out that rotten cold. That being said I was raised in a generation where a good slug of brandy was a genuine remedy…

You can thank me later!

My nana always made hot lemon juice, ginger and honey for a cold and it would always help! I don’t eat honey now but the lemon and ginger still works. I will try with the apple juice next time x

I had a juicer in the UK, one the many electrical applicances that I had to let go when we moved to the US! Haven’t replaced it yet… maybe I should 🙂
