Day out with the kids in Central Scotland by Monkey & Mousey

It’s half term up here in Scotland and despite the kids being home educated we still have a change in routine.  Some of our term time ‘after school’ activities are off and there are TONS of exciting activities in the area that we can join instead.

Here are 10 of our favourite days out with the kids in Central Scotland!

1.       National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.  During the holidays the National Museum hosts a variety of free family activities, from selfie safari’s, dressing up, object handling, meet the expert and face painting.  We love the museum and even without the extra half term activities, there’s still plenty of interactive exhibits and exciting things to see!

2.       Family Storytime at The Scottish Youth Theatre, Glasgow.  From the 9th-13th we enjoyed the story of The Gingerbread Man, the cast involved all the children and have a very interactive performance.  Suitable for kids aged 3-7 and places must be booked in advance at £5/person or £15/family. These are ongoing and so much fun – check the website to find out what is happening this week!

3.       Glasgow Museum of Art (GoMA), Glasgow.  GoMA is hosts free drop in workshops.  Enjoy activities for kids like creating your own paper sculpture, play with scale at the Alice in Wonderland inspired ‘through the looking glass’ session and get stuck into clay, creating your own sculptures.

4.       Active Kids Camp at The Peak, Stirling.  Perfect for half term and every other holiday. Book the kids into a fun filled kids camp, with anything from half days to all 5 days available.  Children are split into age specific groups and can try many different sports and activities.

5.       Almond Valley, Livingston.  From the 9th February there will be the ‘First Tingles of Spring’ event, with spring spotter’s trail, fun in the museum, planting seeds, building nests and other crafts.

6.       Engine Shed, Stirling.  Drop in weaving sessions for children aged 5+, children aged 7+ can create their own zoetrope (the first moving animation), ages 8+ can create their own shop fronts with 3D pens on and  can design their own homes using a variety of materials.  All sessions are drop-in and parental supervision required, selected holiday dates apply.

7.       Sterling Mills, Tillicoultry.  During half term here, we enjoyed a free drop in session! With an inflatable obstacle course, fun fair games and prizes.  Head over to their site to find out what dates are going to be special with coming Easter holiday.

8.       RSPB Black Devon Wetland, Alloa.  A guided tour along the many board walks and paths around the Black Devon Wetland.  Free entry, 2-4pm, but booking required.

9.       Scottish Natural Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.  Become a portrait detective with the special detective kit that can be picked up for free on Sunday 11th February.  Free drop-in.

10.   Dynamic Earth. Edinburgh.  Operation Earth begins in the February holidays where you can become a trainee environmental scientist.  Exploring microscopic worlds, food chain jenga, become a human air sensor, pilot a drone using software and loads more!  Entry is drop-in between 10-4 and included in admission price.
