World Book Day :: The kids round their favourite books up!

World Book Day :: The kids round their favourite books up! via Toby & Roo daily inspiration for stylish parents and their kids.

So it’s World Book Day on 3rd March which is next week (I know can you believe it!?) so, as we are a family that LOVES books, I wanted to do something to mark it and have a little chat about our favourite books.

I know my kids are all only little but they all (including Edith) have favourite books, so in the interest of keeping it useful for you guys I’ve put which down the kids favourite books and the relevant age category too!

Edith Rose’s favourite books. (age 0 – 2 years)

My heart swells when I watch Edie with books – she absolutely adores books. I don’t know if it’s the closeness of having a cuddle whilst we read to her but you can’t sit down in a room without her going to her little pile of books and bringing you one to read!

  • Usborne Touchy Feely Books – especially the one’s with “fluff”.
  • Three tales from Acorn Wood Lift the flap books box set by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler – anything that she can lift the flap to is a MUST for her, it’s by far her favourite thing and top trims touchy-feely, but these particular books are her favourite.
  • ‘I can’ Series board books – this set was gifted to toby by a nursery friend but she absolutely loves it and has commandeered it. Simple little phrases and bright colours make it fun for her.
  • Humphrey’s Corner Large Board Books – bought for her birthday by her Grandparent’s, I didn’t think she would love them as much as she does but she takes them to her Daddy all the time… and he will never refuse her!
  • Peek-a-boo! By Babytown – Ahh this sweet little book has a mirror and farm animals compliment her cute ears, chubby cheeks and twinkly eyes, it’s a no-brainer why she loves this!
  • Mickey Mouse Club House Toon Car Road trip play a sound book – she loves the noises from this one, and noise books aren’t really her thing. This is another one she’s swiped from Toby’s collection!

Tobias’ Favourite Books (age 2-3 years)

Toby is obsessed with books just as much as Edith. It is something of a source of pride for us because he has even impressed the staff at his preschool with his sincere love for literature. He genuinely loves to look at books, and has some pretty brilliant stories that are his favourites.

  • The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler – he’s obsessed with this story at the moment and asks for it all the time. He seems to really love lyrical reading.
  • The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler – possibly a knock on from the original story but he seems to get really giddy with the Gruffalo’s child.
  • The Good Dinosaur – book of the movie, need I say more? He loves dinos, loves books about dinosaurs and reads them all the time!
  • Any Dinosaur encyclopaedia – you can find him pouring over dinosaur encyclopaedias any day of the week!
  • Prehistorica pop up book – This was one of Toby’s birthday presents and it is by far one of the most special books I’ve ever come across. Each page has the most amazing pop ups, this is one for any age to be honest and probably a bit too old for Toby but he loves it none the less!

Reuben’s Favourite Books (age 4/5-6 years)

So Roo isn’t really into books! Literature is genuinely not his thing, and never really has been however if he does like a book, he loves it. He loves you to read to him but he really prefers puzzles, or books that he can interact with to reading himself and would rather look at pictures so this was a bit tougher to get out of him.

  • Maps from Big Picture Press – he adores this book, it’s something that he really pours over, spotting all the different things that each country has to offer. There really aren’t any words in this so he just loves it all the more!
  • Noah’s ark pop up activity book – This book isn’t really a book per se… well, it is I guess but there are no words and the ‘ark’ pops up with a plethora of little foldable paper animals that he adores. He will spend ages making up his own story, helping the animals into the ark and enjoying himself.
  • Build a zoo pop out book from Big Picture Press – another great one from Big Picture Press and one that is very similar to the Noah’s Ark book in the sense that there are no words and the “book” is buildable, he still loves to make up his own words and plan out his own stories.
  • Character Encyclopedias – Any character encyclopaedia, we’ve had Batman Lego, Chima Lego, Avengers, DC Comics… so many, and he will sit with the book for ages, especially with his Dad who will read out to him and then they talk about who is who.
  • All the Roald Dahl books, but especially The Fantastic Mr Fox – He just loves these. To say he isn’t a huge fan of reading he will sit for hours with these novels being read to him. I remember taking The Fantastic Mr Fox on holiday to Turkey when Toby was 6 months and he was 2, and he still talks about those nights and requests the book. His other Roald Dahl favourite is…
  • The BFG – I think we sealed the deal for his love of this when we made home-made snozzcumbers. We have a Roald Dahl cookbook and he has loved making “tasty” dishes from the stories.

So those are my kids favourite books, books we love and want to celebrate on World Book Day, especially if it encourages you guys to try them out! What are your children’s favourite books?
