What we read: People by Blexbolex, wonderfully illustrated book for kids

A book to explore people and what they do. Imagine the conversations you could have with your little ones?

I love this illustrated book for kids! It is a book that seems to have divided people with it’s depiction of people and their roles in life.

The book has everything from biologist to mother, gardener to hypnotist and many many more occupations and lifestyles inbetween. The divide is caused by the pages that have the slightly darker side to life – historical references: slave or executioner. The book even has the ‘corpse’ page.

What do you want to be when you grow up? That is another avenue for this book, and I’m a great believer in ‘never tell a child they can’t be something’!

Images like this have caused real controversy for this book, but I think this is the ideal opportunity to talk to our children about the oppression of people in the past and ensure that this part of history isn’t forgotten, but remembered never to happen again. I also think Goddess is a great opportunity to think out of the box with your kids and discuss religion, past and present. What do you think?

Now I know this isn’t for every one, but I think you could start a tirade of wonderful conversations from this picture book – and if you felt that your child was too young to explain mortality to, then just skip that page. I don’t feel that a child is ever too young to explain the concept of ‘slave’ to, it is important that we understand our history and never forget the oppression of a minority… again, if you feel the child isn’t old enough you could skip those pages.

I think this is a book filled with opportunity to have some fabulously interesting conversations with your child and the illustrations are so beautiful you just want to keep exploring and exploring.
