How to make Cloud Foam – because everyone loves clouds!

Toby getting into the foam! I can't wait to do this again and make a huge batch for outside in the garden!

Toby getting into the foam! I can’t wait to do this again and make a huge batch for outside in the garden!

I found this ‘recipe’ on a fab blog called Fun at Home with Kidsย which is fast becoming one of my obsessions! I tried this out with Toby a long time ago (that is where these super cute flash back pictures come from!) and I’ve decided to try it out with Edith again soon, so in looking forward to that I’ve re-written how to do this!

I decided that me and toby would give this a go one day when Roo was at preschool and we had a little bit of time to ourselves, and it was just too much fun! We had such a blast… or rather he did and I had a blast watching him! The bubbles turn into a foam like substance when they are whipped and they are almost mouldable – they feel like clouds in your hands!

So here’s what you need to use to make your own clouds!

  • 2 tbsp of dish washing liquid like fairy liquid
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • a few drops of food colouring or liquid watercolours
  • a mixer

So add the water and the washing liquid to the mixer and set it on its highest setting to whip up a bowl of foamy fun. If you don’t have a mixer you can use a handheld mixer, but you may want to start off a bit slower and build up so the mixer doesn’t splash out at you.

Add a few drops of food colouring or liquid watercolours and whizz back up. That is it!! Now… play play play!

Playing together - I showed him what the foam was and then I didn't get a look in!

His legs have still got a bit of a blue tinge, but it will eventually wash off. A word to the wise - no clothes if you are using food colouring, it will stain!

You can literally do this with any colour and the faster and longer you mix it for the firmer it gets.

A note for Mama: food colouring does stain, Toby and I still have a few little blue patches on us… it will eventually wash off and I don’t mind, but if you don’t want any staining or don’t want your child’s clothes stained then use liquid watercolours.

I’ve since thought more about this and it would be super easy to make cloud foamย with wiped cream or egg whites too – the only issue would be that you would be wasting food, which I’m not keen on!

This looks like fun – I’ve seen similar recipes around before but didn’t think Little R was old enough to really benefit… But he probably is now!
