How to Celebrate England (and Dragons) on St. George’s Day

Ok, mostly dragons.  I mean, England is great and everything, but when it comes to throwing a party for the kids, it’s all about the knights, princesses, castles and scaly, fire-breathing beasts.  St. George’s Day is a great opportunity to throw a party with family or friends, and even though it isn’t a bank holiday (ahem, it should be, just sayin’), it can be a great excuse to get out of the house after the long winter or just to get moving again.  Here are some of my ideas for St. George’s Day this year.

Knights and Dragons Capture the Flag

Get the kids together and head to the park for some old fashioned capture the flag, but give it a St. George’s Day twist.  Make two teams, and designate one the knights and the other the dragons.  Make sure to go over the instructions carefully, although chaos is pretty much unavoidable in this situation – especially if Daddy in your house is similar to Daddy in our house and decides to beat the kids and make them cry…  Take things to the next level by painting faces red and white or reptile green or have the two teams design their own flags on old towels beforehand.

Build a Castle

This is a perfect inside activity in case it’s rainy or too cold out.  All you need are things you find around the house along with Party Packs Scene Setters to build an epic fort that the kids will go crazy over.  Take the mattresses off the beds and cushions off the sofas and employ all the chairs and tables you can find to build a multi-room castle.  Wrap the Scene Setters around the fort to give it the right look, and then spend the rest of the day playing games and watching films inside.  You can even order food from your local takeaway (fish and chips are a good option!) and host a “traditional” English feast!

Roast a Dragon

If it’s nice enough (ahem, which it won’t be…), we might host a BBQ for our friends and their little ones.  We can’t wait to break out the grill this year and enjoy some sun and cocktails (yes, this party is for the grown-ups, too!).  Let the kids draw English flags on white balloons and give them some safe swords to go nuts with, and then when it comes time to eat, tell them you’re serving roast dragon that you got from a wizard or a knight. If they are anything like Edith, they won’t eat it anyway…

The Perfect English Sunday

St. George’s Day isn’t a bank holiday (yet), but luckily, it falls on a Sunday this year.  I was thinking it might be fun to treat the fambalam to a classic English Sunday.  I’m talking mid-morning fry-up with all the fixings, followed by a day on the river or in the park, and finished up with a proper roast.  If it’s rainy, we’ll bake biscuits in the afternoon and the kids can help frost them with red crosses.

Not many people give St. George his time in the sun, but why not?  Religious or not, everyone loves a great story and a reason to kick back and have a little fun – look at all the celebrations that happen on St Patrick’s day!

Do you do anything for St George’s day?

I think celebrating these sorts of days with traditions is perfect. I love the idea of roast the dragon especially after a day of make-believe playtime for the kids.
